A good photo can only take identification so far — a proper field guide remains essential for serious cross-checking. Three of the most widely used in the UK:

• Collins Fungi Guide (Stefan Buczacki et al.) — a comprehensive, widely recommended single-volume guide covering the British and European fungi most foragers will encounter.
• Mushrooms by Roger Phillips — known for its extensive photographic plates and detailed habitat notes, long considered a foraging staple.
• Geoffrey Kibby's Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain & Europe — a multi-volume, highly detailed series favoured by more experienced and specialist foragers.

We don't link to retailers here — any current edition from a reputable bookseller or library is a good starting point.

The best way to build real identification skill is in the field with someone experienced. The British Mycological Society runs and lists regional groups and forays around the UK throughout the fruiting season — a good first stop if you want to learn alongside local experts. The Field Studies Council (FSC) runs fungi identification courses at various UK locations; we point you to FSC generally rather than endorsing any single commercial foraging school, and recommend checking a course leader's credentials and safety approach before booking.
